FROZEN PIPES
When water freezes in pipes due to cold temperatures, it expands and increases the pressure inside the pipe, as ice has greater volume than water. The built-up pressure needs to escape, causing it to burst through the pipe. We recommend turning on your faucets during extreme cold weather to allow a slow but steady stream of water to escape, keeping the water moving and preventing any pressure build-ups. We also recommend insulating your exposed water pipes and keeping the temperature in your home above 13 degrees.
UNSECURE PIPES
If pipes are not secured, it is possible for them to move around inside the wall when water is suddenly turned on or off. The movement of the pipes can weaken the joints, eventually causing them to fail, thus allowing pressurised water to escape.
WATER PRESSURE ISSUES
Water pressure needs to be maintained at normal levels to ensure your pipes are functioning properly, as increased water pressure can lead to burst pipes or a failed plumbing fixture. In most cases, normal pressure is 30-50psi and should not exceed 60psi. If your pressure is too high, our plumbers can install a pressure reducing valve, bringing it to a safe level.
